Ski for Life was founded in 1998 by Dan Mahony and
his wife Joan. It began out of Dan's and Joan's love
of the sport and as a way to teach young students
the basics and fun of cross-country skiing. After
several years of exposure to the local community,
the venture became well received beyond the boundaries
of Oxford County and into the rest of Ontario.
Dan obtained his CANSI (Canadian Association of Nordic
Ski Instructors) 1st Level Instructors certificate
in 1998 and from there with aid from numerous sources
such as the Heart Health Network expanded to running
programs at Leslie Frost Natural Resources Centre
near Haliburton, New Lowell, Stayner, Wasaga Beach
and many resorts and schools throughout Ontario.
Ski for Life is committed to providing cross-country
ski instruction to those of all ages and skill levels
throughout Ontario. A wide range of services ranging
from individual lessons to all-day sessions is available.
Since 1998, CANSI certified instructor Dan Mahony
has been encouraging the young and old alike to discover
the rich and rewarding experience of cross-country
skiing with Ski for Life. With Canadians being at
risk for cardiovascular disease now, more than ever,
it is critically important to achieve a certain degree
of physical fitness all year round - especially in
the cold winter months when it is tempting to stay
indoors. |

Originally from Guelph, Dan moved to Tillsonburg during
his teenage years and became a well known figure in
the local sports community. He later became a teacher
and before his retirement in 1998 had served his community
for 33 years as both teacher, Vice-Principal and Principal
in the Catholic school system of Oxford County as well
as being a respected member of the church and community
in Tillsonburg.
After suffering from a major heart attack in 1992 and
subsequent single bypass surgery and angioplasty in
1998, he realized the importance of cardiovascular fitness.
It wasn't long before his active lifestyle included
cross-country skiing as a measure to keep fit during
the winter. This hobby quickly grew into a passion once
Dan retired and eventually an irreplaceable part of
his winter lifestyle.
Joan has spent 18 years in office administration with
the London District Catholic School Board and displays
amazing persistence in being married to Dan for over
40 years! She is an avid cross country skier with the
organizational ability to keep Dan from being sidetracked
too much by enjoying the skiing personally, and getting
on with the lesson. Joan is an enthusiastic skier as
well, and assists Dan with lessons whenever possible,
providing support for new skiers and assistance with
equipment.
